The difference between the SAT and the SSAT

The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Secondary School Admission Test (SSAT) have little difference when it comes to the numerous assessments that the College Board offers.

About SAT

The College Board administers the SAT, that is a standardized test, which is recognized for admissions in the United States.

It is a 3-hour MCQ test with two sections:

  • Math and Evidence-Based

  • Reading and Writing

Total Score: 1600 (each section of 800)

To get into the Ivy League, ensure that you have an SAT score of over 1450.

It's registration costs $55 for US students.

About SSAT

The Enrollment Management association administers this test, a standardized test for those looking to apply in private schools.

The tests are offered in three levels:

  • Elementary

  • Middle level

  • Upper level

For verbal and reading section:

  • Analogy question and reading passages

For experimental section:

  • Verbal, Reading, and Mathematics questions

Its registration cost is $149, an additional $45, if registered late.

The major difference is the type of school.

Entrance Exams

Both are entrance exams, but

  • SAT is for admissions in universities

  • SSAT is for students from grades 4 to 11 for admissions in private schools.

Location:

  • Students from all over the world can take the SAT for admissions to the university.

  • Only US and Canadian students can take the SSAT.

Calculator Usage

  • SAT allows calculator usage for one part of the math section.

  • SSAT doesn't allow usage of calculator

Difficulty Level

  • SAT is tougher than SST as it's for high school students – going to university.

  • SSAT is easier as it is used to get into schools.

Administration

  • SAT is administered by the College Board

  • Enrollment Management Association administers the SSAT.

Vocabulary

  • SSATs are more focused on analogies and synonyms

  • SAT's vocabulary includes sentence completion.

Duration of the Exam

  • Duration of SAT is 3 hours and 15 minutes

  • Duration of SSAT varies based on the level:

  • For elementary students: 2 hours and 5 minutes

  • For middle and upper-level students: 3 hours and 5 minutes

While both tests have differences, they have a couple of similarities too. They are two different tests taken to apply to different types of schools.
